Cerrit bobs his head.

"Of course! If he is a cultist then he may have secret powers we don't even suspect! I'm certainly not about to confront him without backup!"

After a moment, he adds, "Naturally I can't perform my usual patrols while I'm working on this. But I hope you will still feel free to call on me in times of crisis."

"I know how to reach you." Cerrit picks up the sending stone on his desk. His is a black kyanite piece, shaped like a wing.

"Of course." Shen Qingqiu's own sending stone is a thick disc of white jade, with a circle in the middle large enough to string a cord through and keep tied to his belt.

"Then do you have anything else you wish to tell me before I go, shixiong?" he asks with a smile.

Cerrit thinks about that question for a moment. "If you can use your distance from our office to monitor sentiment regarding things among the locals, it'd be a bonus. People don't gossip with the chief of the constabulary, without an agenda. You, they might."

"I can keep an ear out, so long as you allow me some discretion in what I report back. Only things that would constitute a crime or threat to public safety, perhaps? I don't think we need to go so far as to create a secret police."

"Yes, you're right. I just mean major disturbances to public peace. I trust you, Shen Qingqiu. You're a reasonable adult, and smart enough not to tattle to me for every little thing."

He's glad to have reasonable adults around.

He grins, surprised. "It's oddly flattering to hear you say so, shixiong. I'll do my best to live up to that."

He stands, straightening his robes with a few pats of his hands. "I'll see you around, then. Do take care of yourself, won't you? And give my regards to Dr. Watson."
